Here’s the steps I took to install ffmpeg on RedHat Enterprise Linux 8. I am a big fan of the new developer account from Red Hat, which provides licenses for RHEL 8 for free. ffmpeg can be used to modify or encode new video files.
EPEL for RedHat Enterprise Linux 8
The first step is to install the RHEL 8 EPEL Repository. This is a single command only.
sudo dnf -y install https://download.fedoraproject.org/pub/epel/epel-release-latest-8.noarch.rpm
RPMFusion Repo
The next step is to install the rpmfusion repos. To do so, you can just run the following commands
sudo dnf -y install --nogpgcheck https://mirrors.rpmfusion.org/free/el/rpmfusion-free-release-8.noarch.rpm
sudo dnf -y install --nogpgcheck https://mirrors.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/el/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-8.noarch.rpm
Enable Repo codeready-builder
In order to install libSDL, you’ll need to enable codeready-builder for RHEL 8.
sudo subscription-manager repos --enable codeready-builder-for-rhel-8-x86_64-rpms
Now go ahead and install ffmpeg.
sudo dnf install ffmpeg
Once you’ve installed ffmpeg on RHEL8, you should be able to to issue the command ffmpeg -version to see the details of your install.
